New Bolton Center Electrical Service and Distribution Upgrade

Precis Engineering provided mechanical and electrical engineering to upgrade the electrical service and power distribution system for a 600-acre veterinary teaching hospital campus. The goals of the project were to provide increased overall electrical power capacity for campus, additional site capacity for future campus expansion, operational flexibility, and improved electrical power system reliability. Key components of the project included:
- Increased campus electrical capacity from 3 Megawatts to 11 Megawatts
- Replaced an existing 34 kV single utility circuit with two new 34 kV electrical service circuits from the local utility (PECO)
- Upgraded existing campus electrical distribution including a new double-ended substation with automatic throw-over and a 34 kV campus loop
- Provided new underground power distribution duct banks throughout campus for existing and future connections to individual buildings and loads
- Designed replacement chiller and new header system, upgraded pumps, and optimized cooling towers
- Phased installation over several years to limit disruption and spread capital costs
