Mission Critical Facilities

Location: Wilmington, DE

Client: AIG Insurance

Value: $275,000

Precis Engineering led an in-house team of mechanical and electrical engineers and coordinated an outside consultant for upgrades to a 1,600 square foot data center. Comprised of two server rooms and one telecommunications room, the facility is the sole processing center for the actuarial services of American Life Insurance Company, a division of AIG. The company’s global nature and the data center’s 24-7 operations meant that the project had to be carefully scheduled and phased to limit downtime. Key components of the project included:

  • Installation of a new CRAC (computer room air conditioner) unit to provide additional cooling for the two data rooms
  • Installation of a single 14 Kw XD CRAC (self-contained high density computer enclosure) unit for new blade servers
  • Integration of new systems with the building’s existing chilled water system
  • Upgrade of the existing 20 KVa UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to a 125 KVa system
  • Sequencing and scheduling of electrical switchgear installation to limit downtime to a 48-hour weekend timeframe
  • As confirmation of the design, a primary electrical service outage to the building occurred just two weeks after project completion and the data center remained fully operational throughout.
