Dow Jones Building I Data Center Reliability Upgrade

Location: Princeton, NJ

Client: Dow Jones

Value:

Precis Engineering provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering to upgrade the power distribution, uninterruptible power supply, and HVAC systems of the main corporate data center. Goals included increased maintainability, improved operations, and a significant increase in power system reliability. Achieving this level of reliability required significant modification of the building penthouse emergency power distribution electrical system. Key components of the project included:

  • Created a redundant UPS source and redundant power supplies to all IT server racks
  • Improved reliability of the HVAC system with a new and separate automatic transfer switch (ATS)
  • Provided a second source of power, permitting 50% of the CRAC units to function in the case of a single power failure
  • Included a new redundant uninterruptible power supply (UPS) emergency generator and N+1 redundancy for all computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units
  • Created an opportunity for future preventive maintenance on the HVAC system without a shutdown
  • Assured proper automated controls upon the loss of any one component
  • Provided detailed conduit routing drawings to minimize IT equipment interference
  • Investigated dry cooler and pump controls and designed a method of redundant HVAC control and monitoring
