Data Center Expansion
Location: Suburban Philadelphia, PA
Client: Pharmaceutical Company
Value:
Precis Engineering led an in-house team of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineers and coordinated the efforts of architectural and structural sub-consultants for a data center expansion and electrical system upgrade for a pharmaceutical company’s North American research data hub. Computational fluid dynamic models were utilized to analyze the phased upgrade and growth of the facility. Final design included a nine-phase, 27-step construction process to allow for complete upgrade while the data center was in operation. Key components of the expansion included:
- Analyzed different options to increase server rack capacity
- Doubled the square footage of the data center
- Performed complete replacement of the electrical service including a new (PECO) utility feed
- Included a new redundant uninterruptible power supply (UPS) emergency generator and N+1 redundancy for all computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units
- N+1 HVAC upgrades to telecommunications rooms
- Replaced all finishes, including ceiling and new raised flooring
- Maintained data center operations throughout expansion
